Fake antivirus alerts
Fake alerts are popup or web redirection that takes you to sites telling you your system is infested and needs their software to fix your machine.  The software charge is usually around 39.00.  Most virus tools can be spoofed or will miss these attacks at some point.  To try stop these make sure you are using a malware/virus tool that includes a ROOTKIT tool.

System seems sluggish
Check your memory, as the operating system grows so does it's appetite for memory.  If you are using XP you need at least 512M but 1G would help.  If it is a flavor of Vista see immediate attention if you have less than 1G of memory. Recommended is 2G or more, in fact the more the better for Vista.
